Material Study 001: 4" x 4" Ceramic Tiles

About

My final project, Material Study 001: 4”x4” Ceramic Tiles, is all codifying data and visually manifesting that data through ceramic tile mosaics. Throughout history, mosaics have been used as representative floor or wall decoration. In my family, we don’t have a history of tradition, but instead we have our mosaic making. Like a family quilt or crest, mosaics represent a shared story in my family. By isolating my material study, I am looking to generate new stories and traditions through codified family language.

This material study is a brain game. Each series is given compositional parameters, like maintaining a certain size and ratio of black to white tiles. Each mosaic is given guidelines; for example, “replace every third tile with a black tile”, or “explode the black tiles to create no repeating patterns”. Together with my two helpful friends, we acted as a single brain, computing and processing different outputs based off the code we thought up.
